I think the wording of this FAQ should be changed to put the paid accounts part first, because I've dealt with several would-be users who seem to think that the way "the Man" wants you to go about getting a LiveJournal is to go on a great scavenger hunt for codes. One of these users did not seem to even be aware of the paid account "option" until I sent her a cranky email for codebegging in my journal. Today, I realize that the current wording of this FAQ isn't very helpful and might well be leading some users astray. Anyone who can improve my wording is welcome to do so.
LiveJournal relies strongly upon the community it creates, so we've decided to require that new accounts be sponsored by a present member of LiveJournal, in order to encourage healthy community growth.
What you will need in order to join is an invitation code from another user, which they can get from ( http://www.livejournal.com/invite ). On the create page( http://www.livejournal.com/create.bml ), you will be asked to enter that code.
Alternately, you can decide to pay for an account right away. For details on the benefits of Paid Accounts, just visit ( http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=131 ).
To build a stronger community, LiveJournal has implemented a system wherein new members must either purchase an account to start out with or be invited by a current LiveJournal user.
If you do not know any LiveJournal users, you may join LiveJournal by purchasing a paid account. To learn more about how to purchase a paid account, please see http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=21 .
If you know a current LiveJournal user, it may be possible to join the site for free if they provide you with an invite code. Each user has a limited number of these codes, which they can get from http://www.livejournal.com/invite/ . Once you have the code, you can create your new journal from the create page ( http://www.livejournal.com/create.bml ).
