I believe the allowed characters are a-z0-9_, and that A-Z and hyphen are sort-of allowed in that they are converted to a-z and underscore, respectively, on account creation (e.g. "The-King" becomes "the_king", and "IfUCJason" becomes "ifucjason", which is probably understood differently at first glance by most people).
