The usage areas for custom color schemes, which can be selected at the Modify Journal page (http://www.livejournal.com/modify.bml), are titles for the variables used when creating styles. Each of the system styles makes use of the variables in different ways, which can be confusing. The following are what the usage area titles mean for each system style.

Page background: the background of the main journal area

LASTN/DAY - color of current view text, entry text, navigation text and the parenthises and separator of the comment
FRIENDS - same as LASTN/DAY plus time text
CALENDAR - the date
Page link: color of all links
Page visited link: color of all visited links
