FAQ 7: Rearrangement and Adding Subtitles (Customizing Journal)

Since kamara, a styles admin, wants people to use FAQ 7 to answer requests about journal titles, why don't we add a subtitle for the section on Journal Titles?

The current spacing makes that paragraph really easy to overlook, and I often specify "the last paragraph" in answers.

"If the only option you see on the Modify Journal page is the ability to select mood icons, you have set your journal to use S2.

ADDING TITLES AND SUBTITLES FOR YOUR JOURNAL AND FRIENDS PAGE

You can also set a title and subtitle for your journal, and a title for your friends page, by visiting http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml while logged in. Scroll down to the section labeled "LiveJournal Options" and type in the title, subtitle, and friends page title you would like. (If you would like only one or two of these, simply leave the other box(es) blank.) The title and subtitle will appear in your profile, and the title and friends page title will appear as the title of your journal and friends pages. Not all system styles support this feature."

Edit: After looking at the FAQ again, I want to rearrange it into three sections, labelled Using S1, Using S2, and "Adding Titles and Subtitles for Your Journal and Friends Page".

How do I customize the look of my journal or community?
LiveJournal offers two style systems to modify the way your journal or community looks. Style System 1 (S1) is controlled by overrides and the Custom Styles page. Style System 2 (S2) is controlled by the Customize Journal page.

All the options described below for customizing your journal also apply to customizing your community. In each case, once you are in the appropriate area, you should select your community from the "Work as user" box and click "Switch" before making changes. You must be the maintainer of the community to do this. Where a Paid Account is required, the community account itself must be paid.

USING S1

If you are using S1, information on customizing your journal can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqcat=s1.

Basic S1 customization is controlled at http://www.livejournal.com/modify.bml. On this page, you can select your journal style from a list of LiveJournal system styles. You can also select colors for your journal, either by choosing a pre-set theme or by entering a custom set of colors. Finally, this page is also where you can input overrides.

Tutorials on overrides and how to use them, along with some commonly-requested overrides, can be found at the HowTo journal, http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=howto.

Paid, Permanent, and Early Adopter accounts can change the entire layout of the page and customize all the HTML by making their own S1 styles. If you make a new style, you must select its name from the dropdown list at http://www.livejournal.com/modify.bml to use it on your journal.

USING S2

If you are using S2, information on customizing your journal can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqcat=s2. S2 does not use overrides. If you are using S2 and you want to customize your journal in a way that your chosen S2 layout does not support, you have two options. If you have a Paid, Permanent, or Early Adopter account, you can create a custom S2 style. With any account type, you can switch back to S1 in order to use overrides. (I don't know whether this sentence is necessary with the rearrangement)

If the only option you see on the Modify Journal page is the ability to select mood icons, you have set your journal to use S2.

Not all system styles support this feature.
