TITLE: Why are some styles or customization options not available?
Paid, Permanent, and Early Adopter accounts have access to all available customization options and all system styles. Free accounts can perform limited customizations, but do not have access to all of the features.
STYLE SYSTEM 1
All of the system S1 styles are available to all users. The ability to create or edit custom styles is reserved as a paid account benefit.
All users can choose a color scheme for their journal, either selecting from a system scheme or creating their own. Some layouts, such as Notepad, Refried Paper, and Webley Boxes on White, have hard-coded colors that cannot be changed.
Free users can modify some aspects of the journal style using overrides. Basic information on overrides can be found at [FAQ 124]; more detailed information, including a list of what free users can change in overrides, can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/community/howto/4516.html
Customized comment pages are not available in the S1 style system, for any user.
If the Modify Journal page is missing some options, then your journal is set to use the S2 style system. You will need to go to http://www.livejournal.com/customize to customize your journal in S2 or to switch to S1.
STYLE SYSTEM 2
Some S2 layouts are available to all users. Other layouts are reserved for Paid, Permanent, and Early Adopter Accounts. These paid-only layouts are "Bloggish", "Component", "Dear Diary...", "Gradient Strip", "Haven", "Opal (Libra OSWD)", "Quite Lickable" and "The Boxer". Free users will be able to see these layouts on the preview page but will not be able to select them.
The ability to create or edit custom layers or custom styles is reserved as a paid account benefit. Free users can customize their journal using the customization interface only.
Customized comment pages are only available to Paid and Permanent accounts.
Different S2 layouts will have different customizations that can be changed using the customization interface. Also, some customization options are only available to Paid and Permanent accounts; in particular, the ability to customize a layout's comment link text is not possible with a free account. A full list of which options are available with each layout, and whether or not each option is available for free accounts, can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=171.
