In the part where it explains the type=scale, this text:

By using the scale method, the LiveJournal servers are able to tell you interesting numerical statistics on the way people have voted, such as the mean and the average.

is probably meant to say this:

By using the scale method, the LiveJournal servers are able to tell you interesting numerical statistics on the way people have voted, such as the median and the average mean.
