Site preference cookies

"Why are my site preferences reseting themselves?" questions don't appear to have a direct answer in any FAQ (feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong). FAQ162 seems to be the logical place to put information on how site preference cookies are saved in your browser in the same way as log in cookes and the cookies & kool aid are what makes your dystopia display.
