We had both given up hope of figuring it out until I found the customization FAQ. That was exactly what both myself and my friends had been looking for on those various occasions, but it wasn't until weeks later that I finally (accidentally) found the info. Perhaps I should have been bright enough to go look through the FAQ, since I did have a question and all, but I had thought it would have been specifically mentioned at the style override section there.
So, I suggest that a link to the customization FAQ be inserted into the style override explanation paragraph on the modify_do.bml page:
