A community must always have at least one user designated as a maintainer. This means that it is not possible to remove yourself as maintainer accidentally unless there is someone else you have designated as maintainer. If this has happened, you will need to contact that user and ask them to re-add you as a maintainer.

This means that it is not possible to remove yourself as maintainer accidentally unless there is someone else you have designated as maintainer. If this has happened, you will need to contact that user and ask them to re-add you as a maintainer. However, a sole maintainer may delete their journal.
The Abuse Prevention Team would need to approve, but I suggest the following change:
Current * The existing maintainers are unresponsive or declare that they no longer wish to maintain the community. * There are situations occurring within the community – such as rampant harassment or spam – which require a maintainer's intervention.
